After Clay made it to the top 12 on 'American Idol 2' in 2003, he worked on his style with the professional hair stylists and fashion experts whom FOX made available to him.  They used their expertise to gradually give him a more updated and stylish appearance. With each Tuesday night show of American Idol, the country watched his transformation. The rest is history, as each week his voice wowed the judges and gave America collective chills!  Along with the glorious voice,  America was amazed to see Clay evolving from nerd to heartthrob, as his red hair was cut, colored and re-styled to disguise his prominent ears, his glasses were replaced with contact lenses, his freckles were hidden,  his teeth were whitened and his clothing became trendier.
