Hacker using Clay's
Screenname dupes
fans on the Official
Fan Club site
Fans
flocked to the Official Fan Club chat room Saturday night when word spread
quickly around message boards that Clay was in the chat room and had asked
that as many people as possible come to the chat because he had some news
to share. Six hundred fans logged in to the chat within about 10 minutes.
The
chat quickly became nearly impossible to read as people greeted the person
who was logged in using Clay's screen name.
On
the previous night (Friday, November 10th) fans were thrilled that Clay
himself had popped into the chat room to say hi, and with typical
good humor had teased the few fans who were in the room at the time and
then thanked them profusely for their support, asking them to let everyone
on the message boards know how much he appreciates them. Fans who
were not in the Friday night chat were eager to join Clay when they heard
he had made an appearance on Saturday.
After
a few minutes it became clear that it was not Clay himself, but
a computer hacker who had breached the site's security and logged in impersonating
Clay. The hacker posted an e-mail address asking fans to send pictures,
and made some unpleasant comments.
At
3:00 AM Sunday Morning, after returning from an event at UNC Charlotte,
Clay learned of the incident and posted this in his blog on the Fan Club
site. It is published here with his permission:

: Apology!
I really
don't know what to say.
I have
very little information about what may or may not have happened in the
fansite chat room tonight.
I received
an email from my mother this evening after returning from an event tonight
at UNC Charlotte. It sort of outlined what happened on this site this evening.
I haven't
actually seen the "transcript" yet, but I SINCERELY apologize to anyone
who was upset, hurt, or offended by what was said.
I wish
I had more information. Unfortunately, it's 3AM here in Raleigh and I have
no way of addressing the issue tonight.
Rest assured
that I will make sure that someone investigates fully to find out if there
are any glitches in the security of the site.
For those
of you who I chatted with on Friday night, it was nice to talk to you.
Hopefully I can pop in and do it again sometime.
For those
of you who were in the chat room tonight. I can assure you that it was
not me.
I apologize
again.
I can only
hope that we can secure my screenname so I can continue to blog and chat
on here more.
I'll let
you know when I know something more.
(Please
feel free to copy this blog to other message boards so that as many can
see this as possible! ... go ahead... copy it... it will be our little
secret! )
